The Flower from the Garbage: An Award-Winning Literary Fiction Novel

The Flower from the Garbage follows Joe and Audrey Palmer, a newly married couple whose lives are quietly shattered by the loss of their unborn child. As grief pulls them in opposite directions, Audrey withdraws inward, while Joe buries himself in work and reckless choices—placing their marriage and future at risk.

Joe’s path changes when he forms an unexpected friendship with Frank, a homeless philosopher living on the streets of Chicago after losing his own wife to cancer. Through their conversations, Frank helps Joe confront his grief, his failures, and his fear of becoming the man he was meant to be. What begins as guidance through tragedy becomes a deeper education in love, responsibility, fatherhood, and the meaning of a good life.

Told through Joe’s eyes, the story traces his personal unraveling and growth alongside the unfolding of a profound friendship—one that reveals Frank’s own journey of loss, service, and purpose.

A work of philosophical fiction, The Flower from the Garbage explores grief, masculinity, love, and meaning in modern America while touching timeless truths of the human condition. Honest, unflinching, and ultimately hopeful, this is a story about suffering, redemption, and what it truly means to be human.
